COLUMBIA — Republican state Rep. Todd Warner of Chapel Hill in neighboring Marshall County announced Monday he will seek the newly created 9th U.S. Congressional District seat, entering a Republican primary against state Sen. Brent Taylor of Eads in Shelby County, according to the Tennessee Lookout.

The 9th District was created last week when the Tennessee Legislature redrew the state's congressional map during a special session, splitting Memphis into three separate districts. The new map remains in effect despite being challenged in three separate lawsuits. Warner, a farmer who describes himself as a fighter who will never back down or apologize for putting Tennessee first, said he is running for the people who feel like nobody in Washington fights for them anymore. He was among the lawmakers who voted to alter state law allowing districts to be redrawn mid-apportionment cycle.

The race will have direct significance for Maury County voters, who share close economic and cultural ties with Marshall County. Warner is a familiar name in this corner of Tennessee, and his entry into a federal race marks a notable step for the region's political voice in Washington.
