COLUMBIA — The Tennessee Department of Transportation has included a major improvement project along State Route 99 (Bear Creek Pike) in its 10-Year Project Plan, committing up to $180 million to widen the corridor from Nashville Highway to Interstate 65. Construction is anticipated in 2037. The City of Columbia has committed $1 million annually for ten years—totaling $10 million—to support the project's funding.
The Bear Creek Pike corridor carries thousands of residents daily and has been a top priority for City Council. The improvements will enhance roadway safety, improve traffic flow, and support reliable connectivity for residents, businesses, and emergency services. Ward 5 Council Member Brian McKelvy said constituents have made the need for safer travel along the corridor clear; the project allows the city to address those concerns while remaining mindful of the surrounding area and the people who live there.
Columbia's participation in the Statewide Partnership Program—which allows communities to collaborate with TDOT on transportation priorities—played a critical role in elevating the project for consideration. City Manager Tony Massey called the inclusion a reward for the city's financial commitment, patience, and persistence. "It's a proud day for Columbia," Massey said.
