COLUMBIA — The Tennessee Department of Transportation has included a major improvement project along State Route 99 (Bear Creek Pike) in its 10-year plan, marking a significant step toward addressing one of the city's most pressing infrastructure needs.
The project will widen Bear Creek Pike from Nashville Highway to Interstate 65, improving safety and traffic flow for residents, businesses, and emergency responders. TDOT has committed up to $180 million toward the work, with construction anticipated to begin in 2037. Columbia will contribute $1 million annually over ten years—$10 million total—through the state's Statewide Partnership Program. City Manager Tony Massey called it a proud day for the community. "Widening Bear Creek Pike has long been one of City Council's main Strategic Planning goals," he said. "Our financial commitment, patience, and persistence in continuing to pursue this project for our community has paid off."
Ward 5 Council Member Brian McKelvy, who represents the corridor, emphasized the balance between growth and character. "I've heard clearly from my constituents about the need for safer travel along Bear Creek Pike," he said. "This project allows us to address those concerns while remaining mindful of the surrounding area and the people who live there."
