COLUMBIA, The City of Columbia has secured a major victory in its long effort to improve one of the county's most critical roadways. The Tennessee Department of Transportation has included a significant improvement project along Bear Creek Pike (State Route 99) in its 10-year capital plan through the Statewide Partnership Program, marking a crucial step toward addressing safety and traffic concerns on the busy corridor.
The project will improve SR-99 from Nashville Highway to Interstate 65, with TDOT committing up to $180 million toward construction, currently anticipated to begin in 2037. The City of Columbia has pledged $1 million annually over ten years, totaling $10 million, to support the project. City Manager Tony Massey called it a proud moment for Columbia after years of pursuit. "Widening Bear Creek Pike has long been one of City Council's main Strategic Planning goals. Our financial commitment, patience, and persistence in continuing to pursue this project for our community has paid off," Massey said.
Bear Creek Pike carries thousands of commuters daily and serves as a vital link for emergency services, local businesses, and residents traveling to Spring Hill, Franklin, and beyond. The corridor has long been a flashpoint in conversations about growth versus infrastructure capacity. Ward 5 Council Member Brian McKelvy, whose district includes much of the Bear Creek Pike area, emphasized the balance the city is trying to strike. "I've heard clearly from my constituents about the need for safer travel along Bear Creek Pike," McKelvy said. "This project allows us to address those concerns while remaining mindful of the surrounding area and the people who live there."
The inclusion of the project in TDOT's 10-year plan reflects the city's successful application to the Statewide Partnership Program, which allows local communities to collaborate with the state transportation agency to identify and fund priority improvements. TDOT Commissioner Will Reid noted that Columbia's local financial commitment played a critical role in the project's elevation for consideration. Additional details will be provided by TDOT as the project moves through planning and development phases.
