COLUMBIA, The City of Columbia is moving ahead with its largest street paving project in a single fiscal year, investing a total of $5.7 million to resurface 6.7 miles of roadway across town by late August.
The expanded effort came together when Volunteer Paving agreed to honor 2025 bid prices, allowing the city to add an additional $1.2 million to its original paving plan. City Manager Tony Massey called the decision straightforward: better pricing meant more miles of streets could be fixed right now, when they need it most.
The city used machine learning and high-resolution cameras to evaluate pavement conditions across all wards, identifying streets with the most significant deterioration. City staff then verified those findings in the field to ensure funding went where it mattered most. The result is a comprehensive list of roads that residents depend on every day, now scheduled for fresh asphalt.
Work is expected to begin in June and conclude by August, weather permitting. Residents along affected routes will receive orange door hangers with anticipated work dates and preparation information. Traffic delays and temporary lane closures are likely, and driveway access may be briefly restricted.
