SPRING HILL, What began as a routine stolen vehicle report at a Spring Hill hotel on Aug. 7 quickly turned into a multi-jurisdictional investigation that ended with a juvenile in custody and two stolen vehicles recovered. Spring Hill Police Department officers are crediting a coordinated effort with the Columbia Police Department for the outcome.
The initial report came from a victim who told officers her vehicle had been stolen from the parking lot of the Home2 Suites in Spring Hill. The keys had been left inside the vehicle at the time it was taken. Investigators tracked the stolen car to a fast-food restaurant in Columbia, where Spring Hill officers, working alongside Columbia Police, located the vehicle and found a 15-year-old inside.
The investigation then turned up a second layer to the case. The juvenile was determined to be a runaway from Georgia, and during the investigation officers found a key fob in the juvenile's possession that traced to a separate vehicle. That second vehicle was parked at the same Home2 Suites in Spring Hill and had itself been reported stolen out of Georgia. The 15-year-old was charged with motor vehicle theft in connection with the Spring Hill vehicle.
The case is a reminder of how quickly a seemingly routine property crime can open into something more complicated, and of how much effective law enforcement depends on departments willing to work across jurisdictions. The Spring Hill Police Department and Columbia Police Department both deserve credit for moving quickly and communicating well enough to get a runaway juvenile off the streets and two stolen vehicles recovered within days of the initial report.
